Dear Residents and Fellows:
As trainees at the DMC, we are part of an extremely diverse group of motivated, intelligent, and loving people. We come from many different cities, states, and countries — all with a shared goal of helping others. We find ourselves in a time of uncertainty regarding the recently re-released travel ban.
As our GME office indicated, this is certainly an unsettling time for many of us. We on the Resident Council recognize the impact that this has had on our trainees, and the potential impact that is yet to come. We recognize there are questions about the implications for the travel ban for our friends, colleagues, family, and program applicants. We want you to know that we are proud of the diversity in our programs and we stand in support of each of our residents and fellows.
We agree with our institutional leadership that all individuals are welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual preference, or any other characteristic that makes us so diverse, unique, and special. We do not support any form of discrimination or harassment, whether it is in relation to immigration policies, or here in our hospitals.
While our GME office cannot provide legal advice to trainees here, we do have legal services and support services available to us through our Employee Assistance program and GuidanceResources. Everyone in the GME office is willing to offer support in other ways, so please reach out to them with any concerns or questions. Similarly, all of us on the Resident Council are available to answer questions to the best of our ability.
As friends and colleagues, not as representatives of the DMC, we do recommend that anyone with citizenship in the six countries listed in the Executive Order consult with an immigration attorney prior to travelling out of the United States.
We have made this post on the Resident Council website to share our stance and to list resources available to our trainees, friends, and family. Please email me directly at email@example.com if you have additional information that we can add to the post.
Again, know that we stand with you and for you.
